Dear Parents
It is really good to see everyone back looking healthy and happy. It is very cold at the moment so please ensure you child has a coat and gloves, hat and a scarf, if necessary.
Farm Visit
The reception and year one had a great time visiting Manor Farm to see the lambs. The children were able to have a stroke of a lamb born about two weeks ago and see lots of new born lambs in the pens. Eleanor Price, one of our ‘old’ girls gave the children a brilliant presentation about how the lambs must be cared for just after they are born. Thank you Eleanor for still being so supportive of our school.
The International Tree Foundation project
The children had another great day today with Mary-Anne Featherstone engaged in work with the project. Year four planted trees at Rachel Bywater’s house and year two planted seedlings at the front of the school. When they are big enough they will be planted in a permanent place by the children.
Hot School Meals
Today, with this letter is a pack re the introduction of the Hot School Meals programme. Please read it carefully. Negotiations have been going on for ages and we had a visit yesterday from the organisers informing us that the meals will begin on 8 March – Monday of next week. If you would like your child to have a hot meal on Monday 8 March then it is imperative that you complete the necessary forms and they are received by Sandy by 10.00am on Monday 1 March. The company have put strict timings on the ordering – they are producing over 6000 meals a day – so late requests are unable to be processed. If your child receives a free school meal then s/he will automatically get a hot one but you still have to complete the form to choose which meal your child wants.
The letter and the notification for this is very tight – this is not our fault. As stated above, we have only been informed late yesterday. We do not, as yet, have the equipment nor have we had the training but we have been assured it will all happen during the next week and hot meals will be served on Monday 8 March. I have got to say that I have tasted a number of them and they are really good – the meal is well worth the money.
Haiti – Dorchester Rotary Club
David Betts will visit the school on Friday with an emergency box, the sort that is being sent out to Haiti. He is a member of Dorchester Rotary and they are coordinating aid from the Dorchester area. He also has a short film to show the children how the aid is being distributed. Mr Betts was very impressed by how much money had been collected by such a small school.
Well done Cheselbourne families.
The Building Works
The building works are going really well and, as you will be aware, the roof is now on, although not the tiles yet. Thank you to all of you for your vigilance ensuring the children are kept safe.
My Absence
Mr Duffin has returned to his ‘other’ school today. I am so grateful for his support and for Durweston allowing him to be with us during my absence. I am not yet able to return full time and so Mrs Holding, who many of you know very well, will be taking my teaching commitment until I am able to do so. We are all very happy that Mrs Holding has joined the team - another pair of very safe hands at Cheselbourne.
World Book Day
Yesterday you received a letter from Mrs Bernadini about World Book Day, Thursday 4 March. Everyone will receive a voucher to use when you are able to spend it and we are hoping that everyone will be able to dress up as a book character for the day. It is important, though, that you do not go out and spend lots of money on an outfit. The children using their imagination is more important.
Kind regards
Ann Herridge

On Thursday 9th July 2009 we learned the fantastic news that we have been awarded the title of Rights Respecting School. This is a UNICEF project and one in which all DASP schools are taking part. Over many months, we have been undertaking activities in order to raise awareness of this important drive, both in our school and in the wider world. The assessor who visited was very impressed with all at Cheselbourne and we can now say we are a Level 1 Rights Respecting School! Well done to everyone!

We started our Healthy Schools Programme in 2003. Our objectives in the first year were to:
-
substantially increase the children’s active time outside the PE curriculum by including physical activity in daily lessons. Research has shown that active breaks enhance learning and we are proud to be among the first to have put national policy into practice
-
strengthen our PSHE and Citizenship schemes of work. A very satisfactory offshoot has been the establishment of an elected School Council
-
After being accredited as a healthy school in 2004, we continued the above and added two new objectives:
-
healthy eating; the children have their own water bottles, so that they have access to water throughout the day, and all children receive a free portion of fruit or vegetable every day at snack time. Children in Reception and Years 1 and 2 are funded under the government’s free fruit and vegetable scheme and the school itself funds Year 3 and 4 children
-
drugs education; in a first school like ours, this involves teaching children about keeping safe and about potential dangers and hazards. As part of this project, the children visited Streetwise and took part in a theatre workshop run by the Bournemouth Theatre in Education group
- In September 2007 we were again accredited as a Healthy School.
